Municipality, Province Celebrating Opening of New Fort Chipewyan Water Plant

After years of work, Fort Chipewyan officially has a bigger and better Water Treatment Plant.

Members of Wood Buffalo council and the Minister of Transportation Ric McIver are in the rural hamlet on Wednesday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Work started back in April 2016 and officially finished in May.

The project included increasing the size of the current water reservoir that holds fresh water, upgrading the pump houses that bring water into the plant and then distribute it to homes, and refurbishing the pump house.

Along with upgrading the plant, the municipality also installed larger water lines on residential streets.

Meanwhile, Mayor Don Scott plans to speak with Minister McIver about the East Clearwater Highway while the two are in Fort Chipewyan.
