Region’s Unemployment Rate Up Month Over Month

The unemployment rate is rising for the second straight month.

According to Statistics Canada’s latest labour force survey, the rate for Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake was 6.3 per cent for August.

This is up from 5.9 per cent in July and 5.8 per cent in June.

The region lost around 100 jobs month over month with the biggest decrease coming in educational services which lost around 600 jobs.

The biggest increase was in the forestry, fishing, mining, quarrying, oil and gas sector which added around 400 jobs.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for Alberta is sitting at 7.2 per cent, an increase from 6.8 per cent, while the national rate is up slightly to 5.8 per cent.
