Wood Buffalo RCMP Providing Driving Safety Tips Ahead Of School Year

Tuesday marks the first day of school – and Wood Buffalo RCMP are sharing some safety tips for drivers.

For the safety of students and citizens, police are reminding you to pay attention to speed limits and crosswalks in school and playground zones.

Increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be moving throughout our communities and the public can also expect to see school buses on the road again.

Starting Tuesday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the speed limit in these areas is 30km/hour – every school day.

The Mounties note you can be fined for the following violations:

  • Passing a school bus with red lights activated: $465.
  • Passing any moving vehicle in a school/playground zone when the speed limit is in effect: $233.
  • No pedestrian shall cross other than at a crosswalk or intersection: $120.
  • Failing to yield to a pedestrian: $776.
  • Parking within 10 metres of a crosswalk or stop sign: $120.
  • Stopping, parking or impeding traffic on a roadway in school zones: $155.
  • Distracted driving: $287 and 3 demerits.
  • Parking is not permitted in fire lanes, transit zones, within 5 metres of a fire hydrant, or within 1.5 metres of a driveway: $120.
  • Fail to signal properly: $155.
