Fort McMurray Golf Team Heading to National Championship

A golf team from Fort McMurray is heading to Nova Scotia to take part in the RBC PGA Scramble Championship.

The team, which includes Keith McGrath, Shaun Janvier, Chris Heavy Shield, Ben Farrington, and Kyle Corriveau, qualified after coming second at the Northern Alberta Finals in Red Deer on Sunday.

The tournament will take part at the famous Cabot Links Golf Resort in October.

McGrath tells Mix News this is an amazing opportunity to win a tournament at one of the best courses Canada has to offer.

“Beautiful courses, just as nice as Pebble Beach, probably nicer, and one of the merits of taking part in this RBC scramble is it’s going to be a four-night stay on the resort.”

They earned their spot in the provincial tournament after winning a scramble tournament at the Fort McMurray Golf Club.

Corriveau, who is the head professional at the Golf Club, was able to join the team after their win on his golf course.

McGrath says adding another great player really helped them calm down and focus on their goal of qualifying.

“If you have a bad shot you don’t get down, you don’t focus on what you did wrong, you focus on making a better shot next time around.”

Four teams in Alberta will take part in the tournament.

Despite all the talent coming together for one championship, McGrath believes they have a good shot of winning.

“We’re gonna come back and make Fort McMurray proud – we did get her done and I believe we’re going to get her done in Cape Breton.”

The tournament will take place at Cabot Links from October 5 – 9.
