Work Begins To Dismantle Weather Catcher

One of Fort McMurray’s most infamous landmarks is about to see its final days.

Crews have started to dismantle the weather catcher at Jubilee Plaza – after Wood Buffalo council approved to take down the structure back in June.

“I couldn’t be happier,” said Mayor Don Scott in an interview last month. “I would have went out and torn it down myself if needed.”

Scott added the structure serves no purpose and the costs are simply too high.

The weather catcher was constructed in 2015 for $2.2 million and was planned to be the focal point of Jubilee Plaza.

Administration expects the cost to tear it down to be around $20,000.

The dismantling will happen over the next couple of days.
