It’s certainly been a wet and rainy summer for the RMWB.

That’s according to Environment Canada – who note between June and July there were over 360 millimetres of rainfall.

Meteorologist Kyle Fougere tells Mix News this has been the third wettest summer on record since records began in 1908.

“If you’re feeling like you haven’t had this much rain in a while, that’s definitely the case. This is the wettest summer we’ve had since 1973 and as I mentioned, we still have a month of precipitation to go. So, if Fort McMurray gets 15 more millimetres – this will be the wettest summer on record.”

Fougere adds the wet summer has been a result of a persistent upper trough making its way through the northern parts of the province.

Looking at the first few days of August, he notes severe weather forecasts may break that record.

“Thursday and Friday evening, there is a chance of thunderstorms in the Fort McMurray area. A lot of them will come in overnight but especially Friday, there will be a chance of some severe weather in the area so, people should make sure they have a way to watch the warnings, if they’re going to be outside, especially in the evenings.”
